What happens when an educator misses a keystroke? A lesson on fluency, courage, and passing the baton to Teacher Turtle.
Mistakes are simply learning opportunities, and today, Teacher Dale discovered he had made one!
In English class, the principle is gentle: Fluency comes first; accuracy comes second.
When a student reads a paragraph aloud for the first time, nervousness is completely natural. The classroom rule remains simple: Never interrupt a student while they are reading.
Sit back, smile, listen, and quietly take notes while the learner finds courage. Correcting a short vowel in the third word can make confidence evaporate. Instead, let the student finish so they can look up, breathe, and realize, āI can do this!ā
Only then does the gentle review begin. Moving sentence by sentence breaks longer words into manageable syllables until everything clicks.
Fluency builds courage, and positive reinforcement builds lasting confidence....Well, most of the time!
Today, Teacher Dale experienced this lesson firsthand.
Excitement ran high for the Teacher Turtle visual vocabulary project. In a rush of enthusiasm, bright new flyers quickly went out to hundreds of professional connections across LinkedIn.
The launch seemed smooth until a sharp-eyed teacher friend sent a quick message: the handle did not lead to the right channel.
A single underscore went missing right where it mattered most. Leaving out that little _ sent visitors to an entirely different YouTube creator.
After a good laugh, the team updated the flyer and kept moving forward. It served as an amusing reminder that while human conversations thrive on good intentions and grace, YouTube algorithms demand 100% precision.
This little adventure also marks the start of an exciting new professional chapter. For the past 17 years, it's been my honor to be a teacher. Now Iām embarking on a new career in real estate.
Between evaluating properties, analyzing market data, and navigating real estate contracts, my weekly schedule fills up quickly. While classroom teaching remains a true passion, standing at the whiteboard all day is no longer possible.
The creative solution: Empower a turtle! š¢Teacher Turtle steps in to keep the learning momentum alive. That same stress-free, "fluency-first" method now powers quick, 10-second visual vocabulary flashcards on YouTube. Students worldwide can practice, laugh, and learn new words anytime, completely free of red ink or awkward pauses.
Real estate and teaching share surprising common ground:
Never let the fear of a small mistake stop progress. If an educator can misplace a keystroke and turn it into a valuable lesson, any learner can conquer the next challenge ahead.
